Integrating girocard into Apple Pay online

The Apple Pay product for credit cards was made available to all savings banks in December 2019. The introduction of girocard for Apple Pay at the POS took place in summer 2020. One year later, girocard was to be made available for e-commerce and m-commerce via Apple Pay. To this end, all relevant contract amendments and the remuneration and fee model had to be developed in accordance with the specifications of the girocard system operator (German Banking Industry Committee).

The solution

Remuneration and contract model developed

In a first step, the requirements for the payment solution were identified and compared with the contract and remuneration and fee structure of the girocard for brick-and-mortar retail. On this basis, the necessary adjustments to the contracts and the development of a price and fee structure were then derived. Within this framework, the requirements for fee settlement with payment service providers also had to be derived. On behalf of our client, we were responsible for the project-related development of the fee and charge model vis-à-vis the network operators and payment service providers, as well as the preparation of the contract documents in cooperation with the lawyers.

The result

Growth in online transaction volume

Our project work ensured the timely introduction of the payment solution and the connection of payment service providers to connect new online merchants. All necessary contract adjustments and additions were developed, the fee and charge model was created, and the billing requirements were defined. The Apple Pay solution with girocard for e-commerce and m-commerce is growing steadily in terms of the number of online merchants and transaction volume.
